London Food Festivals – May 2016

May is one of my favourite months, mainly because we have two Bank Holidays to look forward to! Personally I feel that all weekends should be three days long, it seems more balanced that way. 😉

The milder weather brings with it the return of many outdoor-based events and food festivals, getting lots of us back into the spirit of trying new things and socialising after months of (perhaps) staying indoors huddled up on the sofa.

Fancy some inspiration to get you out and about? Here is a pick of the bunch of local London festivals coming up over the next month – treat yourself to some moreish munch at one of these:

Falafel

When: Sunday 1st May 1.00pm – 5.00pm

What: London Falafel Festival

Where: Jubilee Place, Borough Market, 8 Southwark St, SE1 1TL

Price: £20, including falafels

Did you know that 2016 is the International Year of Pulses? The only way to celebrate this occasion in style is to enjoy a feast of falafels, which are delicacies based on dried peas, beans, lentils and chick peas.

Four internationally acclaimed chefs compete to cook you the best falafel – enjoy flavours such as aubergine & fava bean, black-eye-bean and spiced chickpea with an array of delicious sauces and spices.

Saint Katharines Docks-Starbucks Coffee

When: Every Friday, 11.00am – 3.00pm

What: St Katharine Docks’ World Food Market

Where: St Katharine Docks, Marble Quay, 50 Saint Katharine’s Way, E1W 1LA

Price: Free

If you haven’t been to St Katharine Docks before, this is a great excuse to pop down for an extended lunch break. It’s the only marina in Central London and is such a beautiful waterside setting. If the sun is shining you will feel like you are somewhere much more glamorous, with moored boats and yachts as your backdrop.

Every Friday you can take your pick from over 20 local street food stalls offering a diverse range of delicious dishes, including British stew and dumplings, Jamaican patties and Mediterranean Paella.

Because no one should have to eat Pret every day…head down and treat yourself to something a bit different!

Camden

What: Against the Grain – Gluten Free Festival

Where: Middle Yard and Canalside Bar, Camden Market, NW1 8AL

Gluten-free diets and products have rapidly increased in popularity over the last few years, mainly due to heightened awareness of potential intolerance and sensitivities, as well as growing trends towards diets such as the Paleo diet and grain-free living.

Camden Market is a wonderfully vibrant destination for a day out – if you are keen on learning a bit more about various alternatives to everyday items such as bread and pasta, check out the food stalls here. Vendors include the Louisiana Chilli Shack, Feed Me Primal and the Artisan Gluten Free Bakery and there will be a variety of live cookery demos, talks and book signings. You can also have a pint of Bohemian Rhapsody draught pilsner at Westerham Brewery’s gluten-free bar!

What: Free From Festival 2016

Where: The Boiler House, 152 Brick Lane, London E1 6QL

The Free From Festival focuses not only gluten, but dairy and refined sugar too. Similarly to gluten, growing numbers of people are reporting sensitivities and intolerance to dairy products, causing the demand for alternative products to grow at a fast rate. Awareness of our daily sugar consumption is also a hot topic at the moment and learning to reduce our intake where possible is a great place to start as the basis to a healthier lifestyle.

Indulge in sugar-free chocolate and beverages, gluten-free desserts and savoury snacks, together with organic wine and live music. Local chefs will also be providing live cooking demonstrations on how to cook healthy tasty food without having to rely on gluten and sugar.
